Commercial UAV News’s Juan Plaza sat down with Vigilant Aerospace Systems CEO Kraettli Epperson to discuss how the FAA’s proposed Part 108 operational rule will change technology’s relationship with aviation.
Plaza frames Part 108 as a shift away from legacy crewed rules that treat avionics as supporting equipment, and toward a BVLOS framework where technology becomes part of the regulated safety architecture, including “detect-and-avoid” (DAA), command-and-control (C2) link performance, remote operations centers, and required digital services.
Epperson pointed to the FAA’s use of performance-based requirements and industry consensus standards as a way to support innovation without forcing constant rule revisions, saying,
“We were very excited to see that the FAA adopted performance-based and standard-based guidelines in the Part 108 NPRM. It showed a willingness to help a highly technological industry to develop and flourish without running afoul of the regulations.”
