The University of North Dakota’s John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences recently highlighted its partnership with Vigilant Aerospace Systems to integrate FlightHorizon TEMPO into uncrewed aircraft systems training, research, and field operations in UND Today. The collaboration supports UND Aerospace’s work in beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations, “detect-and-avoid” (DAA), uncrewed aircraft systems traffic management, and counter-uncrewed aircraft systems capabilities. FlightHorizon TEMPO provides real-time airspace monitoring, traffic alerts, and situational awareness tools for crewed and uncrewed aircraft operations.

Under the agreement, Vigilant Aerospace’s FlightHorizon software is expected to support both education and research activities. The UND Today article notes that the collaboration also includes work related to the Federal Aviation Administration’s Near-Term Approval Process for UAS Traffic Management services. The partnership reflects the growing need for practical BVLOS safety case development, multi-sensor detect and avoid, and airspace management tools for advanced UAS programs.

About UND Aerospace

The John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences at the University of North Dakota is one of the nation’s leading aerospace education and research institutions. Based in Grand Forks, North Dakota, UND Aerospace offers programs in aviation, uncrewed aircraft systems, atmospheric sciences, space studies, and related fields. The school operates one of the largest civilian aircraft fleets in North America and supports education, training, and research across crewed aviation, UAS, autonomy, and National Airspace System integration.

About Vigilant Aerospace Systems

Vigilant Aerospace is the leading developer of multi-sensor detect-and-avoid and airspace management software for uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS or drones). The company’s product, FlightHorizon, is based on two NASA patents and uses data from multiple sources to display a real-time picture of the air traffic around a UAS and to provide automatic avoidance maneuvers to prevent collisions. The software is designed to meet industry technical standards, to provide automatic safety and to allow UAS to safely fly beyond the sight of the pilot. The software has won multiple industry awards and the company has had contracts and users at NASA, the FAA, the U.S. Department of Defense and with a variety of drone development programs.
